Here at UrbanHub we’ve always been champions of supporting local business. But now, more than ever, it’s important to draw attention to how much they need community support. When you think about the part local business plays in the community, you’d agree they’re a valuable resource worth supporting.

Everything from sponsoring local sports clubs and charities through to employing locals. The businesses in your area do plenty for you, even if you don’t see it every day. Everyone’s doing it tough at the moment, but it’s times like these we can all work together. With a bit of community spirit, we’ll come out the other side of Covid-19 as strong as we ever were.

Here are just a few reasons why it’s so important to support local business.

We already love supporting local business

Firstly, we already love supporting local! One of the great things about our country is the sense of community we all share, from the biggest cities to the smallest towns. It’s part of our culture to get behind new ventures, new ideas, and small businesses alike. We want to see everybody succeed, and that’s just how we are.

While restrictions have hit most companies around the world, it’s the smaller local businesses that feel the most pain. They don’t have the huge profit margins of multi-nationals, nor do they have the bank balance or assets to absorb a downturn. So many businesses have found innovative ways to keep serving the community during the pandemic, and this should be applauded and supported.

Local jobs for local people

It doesn’t matter where you live, you’ll find local businesses usually employ local people. From the grocery store down the road to the real estate agency that services your community, you’ll find plenty of locals working there.

If you stopped to think how many of your friends, family and neighbours are employed by local businesses, you might be surprised. So, to put it simply, supporting the businesses who support local families can only be good for everyone.

Keeping your community viable

If you love the fact that you’ve got shops and services close by, then that’s another reason you need to support them right now. When you look at small towns all over the world, you’ll find vacant shopfronts that used to be friendly, local businesses. Usually, it’s because a bigger company moved in, offered a cheaper alternative, and the small business can’t compete.

If you want to keep those shops and services to stay in your local area, you need to help make them profitable. A community is built on the people and businesses within it, so by supporting each other, communities grow stronger.

The economy depends on local business

Let’s face it, small businesses don’t make as much money as the huge corporations. However, the huge corporations aren’t the ones putting money back into local communities. Think of it like a circle. You shop at the local grocery store. The money you spend goes towards wages for local employees. Then, the grocery store employee may spend some of their wages at the local business you work for, hence keeping you employed and able to put food on your table.

When locals support local business, the whole economy and community thrives.
