Healthy Habits for Busy Professionals

No matter how much we try to stay on top of everything, life often gets away from us. As a busy professional, you’ve already got a lot on your plate. There are deadlines to meet, meetings to attend, phone calls to return, emails to respond to.

No matter how much we try to stay on top of everything, life often gets away from us. As a busy professional, you’ve already got a lot on your plate. There are deadlines to meet, meetings to attend, phone calls to return, emails to respond to. Then there are social events, time with friends and family, maybe even sports or other hobbies. So, when do we really find time to look after ourselves?

Usually, there are three areas of life we all want to be better at. Healthy eating, exercising more and self-care. Unfortunately, these are precisely the three things that fall to the bottom of the list when we’re busy. So, here are some helpful habits you can adopt to achieve everything you want while staying healthy.

Build your organisational skills

Firstly, being organised has to take priority. It might sound boring, but the best way to fit everything into your day is to plan accordingly. We often think of calendars as tools to remember birthdays and work meetings, but they can be so much more.

Use a calendar to schedule everything you want to do. If you want to spend Sunday evening doing meal prep for the week, schedule it. Diaries and calendars aren’t just for workdays. Some people are naturally disorganised and somehow seem to get things done. However, it’s fair to say a lot of unnecessary stress goes into those achievements. So, plan your day, and learn how to stick to it.

Tips for healthier eating

How easy is it to head down to the local café for lunch if you haven’t prepared anything? Well, it’s a little too easy, and that’s the problem. However, doing that is expensive and you’re also probably not going to make healthy choices every time. Here are some tips to make healthy choices without the fuss.

Bring lunches to work. Just by searching online, you’ll find plenty of hacks for making a week’s worth of lunches in a single night.

Cook in bulk. There are so many recipes out there for slow cookers or crockpots, and it’s super easy. If you’ve got a big family, it’s a great way to have a full meal ready when you get home. If you’re in a smaller household, that’s fine. Using a slow cooker to make larger meals means you can freeze some for another night.

Use recipes. If you often stress about what to make or feel like you never have the ingredients, that’s when takeout becomes an option. However, if you use recipes, you always know in advance what you need and the cooking process is easier.

Healthy snacks. We all need snacks from time to time. Just make sure you keep healthy ones both at work and at home.

Keeping active. We all want to be more active, and here are some simple ways you can do it every day.

Schedule exercise. Remember the calendar idea? Look for convenient times and schedule a gym session, run, or whatever activity you prefer.

Take the stairs. Rather than use the elevator, take the stairs. A brisk walk up some stairs gives you more cardio benefits than you might think.

Interval training. Set a timer and take regular breaks from your screen. Every hour, get up and move around. Do a few squats, walk up and down the stairs, or just take a quick walk. Regular movement throughout the day is essential.

Looking after yourself

Finally, take some time for yourself. Self-care is important in balancing our busy lifestyles. Consider a quick yoga session in the morning, and maybe some meditation before sleep. Neither needs to take a long time, but it’s a good way to start and end the day. And most importantly, make time for the things you love. Whether that’s relaxing on the couch with family, visiting friends, going for a bushwalk – whatever relaxes you, make the time for it.
